From Question to Result — The Process

How a PATLIB staff member's question becomes a reproducible patent intelligence result.

The Question

PATLIB staff member asks their question in natural language — no SQL, no code.

Claude AI

AI understands the context and generates optimized SQL queries for PATSTAT.

PATSTAT MCP

MCP server executes queries directly on EPO BigQuery (130M+ patent records).

Result

Analyzed data as tables, charts and strategic recommendations.

The original question: "Which companies are active in Medical Technology in Europe? And which other technology fields are they involved in — so I know who I can offer our university patent to?" This single question requires: access to PATSTAT, SQL queries across 10+ tables, knowledge of the WIPO classification (35 fields, 5 sectors), company name harmonization and statistical analysis.

Siemens Healthcare (DE, 3,604) dominates ahead of Alcon (CH, 2,859, growing) and Cilag/J&J (CH, 1,792, growing). German firms strongly represented: Fresenius, Aesculap, Biotronik, Carl Zeiss Meditec. Switzerland and France as further key markets. Notable: Novartis and Novo Nordisk are declining — potential portfolio restructuring.

Technology Diversification

How focused or diversified are MedTech leaders? Share of Medical Technology in their total portfolio.

Data table: Diversification Profiles
CompanyCountryMedTech %Top Adjacent Field
Siemens HealthcareDE40.3%Measurement 23%, Computer Tech 22%
Brainlab AGDE57.5%Computer Tech 33%
Fresenius MedicalDE63.9%Chemical eng., Measurement
Carl Zeiss MeditecDE57.6%Optics, Computer Tech

Hoffmann La RocheCH7.8%Pharmaceuticals 31%, Biotechnology 23%
FraunhoferDE2.6%Computer Tech 15%, Measurement 8%
CNRSFR5.2%Pharmaceuticals 14%, Measurement 8%

The lower the MedTech share, the broader the technology portfolio. For patent commercialization this means: A MedTech patent can also be relevant for Bosch (Measurement), Roche (Diagnostics) or Fraunhofer (Research) — companies that don't have MedTech as a core field but actively invest in it.

Cross-Sector Matrix — All 35 Technology Fields

Top technology fields of European MedTech applicants — showing where else they are active.

All 47 top MedTech firms are also active in Measurement. 44 of 47 hold patents in Computer Technology. Even highly specialized applicants like Coloplast (89% MedTech) own patents in adjacent fields — these are the entry points for university patent commercialization.

Search Strategy — PATSTAT Query

The SQL approach used to identify top applicants in a target technology field.

Methodological notes: WIPO Technology Fields (tls901) instead of raw IPC codes for broader coverage. Weight threshold 0.25 filters only relevant assignments. doc_std_name for harmonized company names. applt_seq_nr > 0 separates applicants from inventors. All parameters (technology field, countries, time period, threshold) are easily configurable.

Use Case — University Patent Commercialization

How to use this data for patent commercialization strategy.

Target Field Analysis

Find top 50 European applicants in the university patent's technology field. Filter by trend — growing firms are particularly interesting.

Diversification Check

For each potential licensee: In which of the 35 WIPO fields are they active? Match with the specific field of the university patent.

Shortlist Creation

Identify companies active in both the target field and adjacent fields of the university patent — this forms the commercialization strategy.

Summary

Key findings from the European MedTech technology leaders analysis.

Market

54,481 MedTech patents from 47 top applicants in Europe (2015–2024). Switzerland and Germany dominate. Growth trends at Alcon, Cilag/J&J, Biotronik, Karl Storz and Siemens Healthineers AG.

Technology

All 47 top firms are also active in Measurement and 44 in Computer Technology. The convergence of MedTech with IT, Optics and Pharmaceuticals offers the strongest commercialization opportunities for adjacent patents.

Commercialization

Diversification analysis shows: Even specialized MedTech firms have 5–15 active secondary fields. A university patent in Measurement or Computer Technology potentially reaches all 47 top applicants as licensees.

Methodology

Fully reproducible via PATSTAT MCP + Claude AI. No SQL skills required. Technology field, countries and time period freely configurable.

Methodology

Search strategy, data sources, and known limitations.

Data Source

EPO PATSTAT Global (Autumn 2025 Edition) via Google Cloud BigQuery, accessed through custom MCP server. Coverage: 12 European countries (DE, CH, FR, GB, DK, SE, IT, ES, PL, NO, FI, AT).

Classification

WIPO Technology Fields (35 fields, 5 sectors) via tls901_techn_field_ipc + tls230_appln_techn_field with weight threshold 0.25. Applicant identification via doc_std_name (harmonized names).

Reproducibility

All queries executed live via PATSTAT MCP server during a single conversation with Claude AI. No manual data manipulation. Parameters freely configurable for any technology domain.

Stack

PATSTAT BigQuery + patstat-mcp (custom MCP server) + Claude AI for analysis and visualization. All SQL queries are included and reproducible.

Scope Limitations

  • Only 12 European countries covered — US, CN, JP applicants excluded from this analysis.
  • WIPO Technology Fields used (broader than IPC subclass). Weight threshold 0.25 may exclude some marginal assignments.
  • Company name harmonization via doc_std_name may merge or split entities in edge cases.
  • 2023–2024 data may be incomplete due to the ~18-month publication delay in PATSTAT Autumn 2025.
Glossary — Patent Terms Explained
WIPO Technology Fields
A classification of 35 technology fields grouped into 5 sectors (Electrical engineering, Instruments, Chemistry, Mechanical engineering, Other fields), derived from IPC codes by WIPO.
doc_std_name
PATSTAT's standardized applicant name — normalizes spelling and legal form variants of the same entity.
Weight Threshold
In PATSTAT, each technology field assignment has a weight (0–1) indicating relevance. A threshold of 0.25 filters only meaningful assignments.
Patent Family (DOCDB)
A group of patent applications protecting the same invention across countries. Counted once to avoid double-counting.
MedTech Relevance
Share of Medical Technology patents in a company's total patent portfolio. Higher values indicate more focused MedTech players.
Cross-Sector Analysis
Examination of which other technology fields MedTech applicants are active in — useful for identifying commercialization opportunities.
